What the Current Pulled Toward
|
This week the current pulled toward
new beginnings.
Last week, I stepped into a new
chapter professionally by joining the
Town of Rocky Mount.
After spending so many years in municipal parks and recreation and then
stepping out into the consulting world, it feels good to be back working
inside a community again. I’ve really missed the inner workings of local
government and now I’lll get back to helping move projects forward and
contributing but in a slightly different way. Rather than working in a
single department, I’m coordinating grants and researching funding
opportunities across all town departments.
That said, Oxbow isn’t
going anywhere. If anything, this shift makes it more focused.
Oxbow will continue to take on projects where strategy, outdoor
recreation, placemaking, and community partnerships all intersect,
though the difference now is that the work will be more intentional and
selective. Less chasing everything, more leaning into the areas where
experience and perspective can make the biggest difference.
At the same time, there are new beginnings
happening at home, too. Noli started at
Salem Montessori,
which comes with all the emotions parents know well: excitement,
curiosity, and the realization that time is moving whether we’re ready
or not. As with the three before her, watching your kids step into their
own beginnings shows you that growth rarely happens without a little
uncertainty.
New chapters, whether
personal or professional, rarely arrive neatly packaged. They come with
questions, adjustments, and a little faith that the next step is worth
taking.

One thing that stands out quickly in Rocky
Mount is how much community energy flows through
collaboration.
Organizations like
Community Partnership
play a central role in bringing people together around the town’s
identity, events, and local economy. From seasonal celebrations to
downtown gatherings, their work helps activate the community in ways
that support local businesses, connect neighbors, and create the kind of
shared experiences that make small towns special. Events like the annual
“Come Home to a Franklin County Christmas” bring thousands of people
downtown, highlighting vendors, performers, and local restaurants while
strengthening community pride and economic activity.
The effort is powered by collaboration: businesses,
nonprofits, local government, and civic organizations all pitching in to
make these experiences possible. Sponsors and partners ranging from
local banks and healthcare providers to parks and recreation groups help
ensure these events remain accessible and community-focused.
Thriving communities don’t happen by accident.
They’re built when people decide to work together, invest in their
place, and create opportunities for others to gather, celebrate, and
belong. That’s what makes initiatives like this meaningful.
And in a season of new beginnings, that spirit of
partnership feels like a pretty good place to start.
